INTEGRATED GRAMMAR: EXERCISES

GOOD MORNING STUDENTS
PLEASE POST YOUR ATTENDANCE HERE:

Yesterday we had done integrated grammar exercises based on reported speech, gap filling and tenses etc.

Today we shall be doing some grammar exercises based on editing.

At the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • understand the method of editing a passage
  • apply the techniques to passages to be edited

Passage Editing is of two types

  • Error type in this you are required to identify one error in each marked line and make a correction.
  • Omission type in this you are required to identify which word is missing in each marked line and write it.

Let us begin with a few tips on how to handle passages for editing:

1. Read the complete passage from beginning to end at least twice
2. Try to understand what the passage is about.
3.Try to identify which tense has been/ should be used.
4. See whether the passage is in active or passive voice.
5.If the passage is about some natural phenomena, scientific or geographical fact or even some universal facts, the present tense should be used, preferably  the Simple Present tense or Present Indefinite tense will be used.
6. If the passage narrates some event, incident or an experience that took place in the past, the Past tense should be used, preferably the Past Indefinite tense.
7.There will be a passage in the questions with lines numbered a, b, c, d and so on.
8.There will be only one error in each line that is marked with a,b, c and so on
9. In case a line is not marked with a, b, c, d and so on, there is no error in that line.
10.The errors will be based on grammatical concepts such as articles, determiners, tenses, subject verb agreement, connectors,non-finites , prepositions and so on.
11.You are required to identify and write down the incorrect word as well as the correct word that should have been used in its place.
12. The passage may also have one word missing in each marked line. You must find the missing word which may be an article, verb, preposition , conjunction or so on.
